YOUTH BAND DIRECTOR & WOMEN'S RIGHTS WORKER WIN EIGHTH ANNUAL UNITY IN DIVERSITY AWARD
(West Vancouver) - Douglas Macaulay, the Director of West Vancouver Youth Band and Phyllis Scott, Vice President of International Federation of University Women are this year's recipients of the Unity in Diversity Awards presented annually by the Baha'i community of West Vancouver to individuals or organizations who have made significant contributions to promoting understanding and mutual respect between diverse groups.
The two winners received their awards at a ceremony and reception held at the West Vancouver Memorial Library on Thursday, November 9.
Mr. Macaulay has been the Music Director of the West Vancouver Youth Band since 1993. As a direct consequence of Doug?s leadership, the band has expanded from 39 to over 170 musicians and developed into a renowned and formidable entity for the community. He has enriched the lives of hundreds of young people and their families during the past decade. Doug is a long-time resident of West Vancouver and considers his commitment to the West Vancouver Youth Band his strongest priority.
Macaulay was specially recognized for his efforts to include all cultures in the Band membership and performances. The Band members are made to feel part of a family regardless of their racial, cultural or religious background. Over the years, he has coordinated a multicultural concert - Hands Across the Sea -at the Squamish Nation Recreation Centre in North Vancouver featuring a Hawaiian youth band, Squamish Nation performers and the West Vancouver Youth Band. Other concerts have featured African and Hebrew music among others to introduce diverse cultures to the Band.
Mrs. Phyllis Scott is a past president of the West Vancouver University Women's Club. She is currently Vice-President of the International Federation of University Women's role where her years of volunteering, her many talents and undivided commitment to the betterment of society culminate in serving in this prestigious global forum. In this role, she contributes to various submissions on the rights of women and girl children to the United Nations on behalf of IFUW.
